How to Get Your CV Past ATS Software
By the Mela Remote team · October 2026
An applicant tracking system (ATS) is software that collects, sorts and ranks job applications. Many companies receive hundreds of CVs for one remote role, so the ATS screens them first and only the best matches reach a recruiter. If your CV isn't readable by the system, it may never be seen, even if you're a great fit.
1. Match the job description
Read the advert carefully and note the skills, tools and job titles it mentions. If the advert says "customer support", don't only write "client care". Use the same words in your summary, skills section and experience, but keep it natural.
2. Keep the layout simple
Fancy templates with columns, tables, icons, photos and text boxes often confuse ATS software. A clean, single-column layout with clear headings (Profile, Experience, Education, Skills) is safest.
3. Use a standard file type
Unless the employer asks for Word, a text-based PDF works well. Never upload a scanned image of your CV, because the system can't read the words.
4. Put contact details in the body
Some systems skip headers and footers. Put your name, phone, email and LinkedIn link at the top of the page itself.
5. Show measurable results
Recruiters who do see your CV want proof. "Resolved 60+ tickets a day with a 95% satisfaction score" is far stronger than "responsible for answering tickets".
6. Tailor every application
Sending the same CV everywhere lowers your match score. Spend five minutes adjusting your summary and skills for each role.
